How are these trays used today?

Many of these pieces now function as coffee tables or side tables when mounted on folding or fixed wooden stands. They also remain suitable for use as serving trays or decorative displays. The sturdy papier-mâché and lacquered wood construction handles everyday placement of drinks and decorative objects with ease.

What periods do these pieces date from?

The selection spans from the Georgian and Regency eras through the Victorian and Edwardian periods up to the early twentieth century. Regency examples often feature papier-mâché by makers such as Clay. Later pieces from the Edwardian era and the early twentieth century continue the black lacquer and painted tradition with occasional table formats.

Are tray tables original or later additions?

Some pieces were manufactured specifically as tray tables, while many antique serving trays have been paired with custom or period-appropriate stands later in their life. Both configurations appear frequently in the listings, offering options for height and stability depending on how the piece will sit in a room.

How do I care for black lacquer?

Keep lacquer surfaces away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to protect the finish and gold leaf decoration. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners, which can dull the gloss and damage the hand-painted chinoiserie details.
