What is a chased silver pitcher used for?

These vessels were primarily designed for serving liquids such as cream, water, beer, or cider during formal dining and tea service. Over time, their role shifted from functional tableware to decorative cabinet pieces. Today, collectors use smaller cream jugs for milk service, while larger ewers and tankards serve as striking decorative centerpieces in domestic interiors.

What does silver plated mean on a jug?

Silver plated items consist of a base metal, such as copper or a white metal alloy, covered with a thin layer of pure silver. This technique allowed makers to offer larger decorative vessels at a lower cost than solid sterling pieces. Plated water jugs and beer tankards from the nineteenth century still offer substantial decorative presence and durability for daily display.

How should I care for antique silver?

Antique silver requires gentle cleaning with specialised non-abrasive polishes to preserve the delicate chased details and historical patina. Regular dusting with a soft cloth prevents dust buildup in the recessed areas of the pattern. Store pieces in dry environments away from direct sunlight and chemical fumes to maintain the integrity of the metal and any secondary materials like timber or bone.
