What is a club armchair?

A club armchair is a deeply padded, comfortable seat designed for relaxation, traditionally upholstered in leather or heavy fabric over a sturdy frame. These chairs became staples in libraries and smoking rooms for their robust build and ergonomic support.

How do I date a wooden armchair?

Dating relies on observing the prevailing style, such as Art Deco streamlining or Victorian carving, alongside timber types and construction methods. Makers often left clues in the foot designs, upholstery techniques, and secondary woods used within the frame.

Are these chairs comfortable for daily use?

Most of these armchairs are built with deep seats and sprung interiors intended for prolonged sitting, whether reading or working in a library. Many period examples retain supportive padding or have been recently reupholstered to restore their original comfort.

How do I care for leather upholstery?

Leather upholstery benefits from regular dusting and occasional conditioning with appropriate balms to keep the hide supple and prevent cracking. Keeping the chair away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight preserves the natural colour and finish of the leather.
