How do I clean a camphor trunk?

Wipe the exterior surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust without disturbing the wood finish. Avoid applying modern liquid polishes that might seal the grain and trap moisture. For the interior, leave the wood unpolished to maintain the natural insect-repellent aroma. A light vacuuming inside removes debris from corners safely.

Can I use these trunks for everyday storage?

These chests function exceptionally well for storing blankets, woollens, and seasonal garments at home. The dense timber keeps moths and dampness away from delicate textiles naturally. Ensure items placed inside are clean and completely dry before closing the lid. Avoid overloading the internal hinges and straps during daily use.

How do I identify a campaign trunk?

Look for recessed brass handles on the sides and flush hardware designed to prevent snagging during transport. Heavy brass binding along all exposed edges is another primary indicator of military utility. Many examples split into two separate sections to facilitate loading onto pack animals or ships. Maker stamps or registry marks occasionally appear inside the lid or on the lock plate.

Why do these trunks smell so strong?

Camphor wood naturally contains volatile oils that produce a sharp, medicinal fragrance. This scent deters insects and protects stored textiles from moth damage over long periods. Air the trunk in a well-ventilated space if the aroma proves too intense upon arrival. The scent diminishes gradually with age and exposure to fresh air.
