What periods do these wooden pictures cover?

The pieces span from the eighteenth century through the Victorian era and Edwardian period up to the mid-twentieth century. Most items date from the nineteenth century, reflecting prevailing artistic and framing styles of the Victorian and Regency periods.

How were historic artist easels used?

Large wooden studio easels supported canvases during the painting process and often featured adjustable mechanisms to alter the height and angle of the work. Many incorporate sturdy timber frames designed to bear heavy oils and accommodate artists working in large formats.

What types of frames accompany the artwork?

Frames are constructed from woods such as oak, mahogany and walnut, frequently tailored to the period of the enclosed painting or print. Some feature intricate carving, gilded accents or specialised regional joinery like Kashmiri walnut work.

How do I care for antique wooden frames?

Keep wooden frames and panels away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature shifts to prevent the timber from warping or splitting. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid applying liquid polishes that might damage historic finishes.
