What periods do these brown wood paintings cover?

The listings span from the seventeenth century through the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras up to the twentieth century. Pieces reflect the aesthetic preferences of each respective period, utilising traditional wood supports and oil painting techniques.

How should I care for oil paintings on wood?

Keep wooden panels away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature shifts to prevent the wood from warping or cracking. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels and dust the surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth.

What is the difference between canvas and wood panels?

Wood panels provide a rigid, solid support for oil paint, whereas canvas offers flexibility and texture. Panels often date to earlier periods or specific regional schools of painting.

Are the frames original to the paintings?

Many pieces retain their period wooden frames, which match the stylistic era of the artwork. Examining the joinery and finish helps determine the age relationship between frame and painting.
