What is a brown oak potboard used for?

These pieces served as practical storage in traditional kitchens and dining rooms, holding heavy kitchen utensils and food stores. Today, they function as sideboards or display units in modern living spaces, offering generous surface area and practical low shelving.

How do I date a brown oak potboard?

Dating relies on examining construction methods, tool marks, and timber shrinkage, alongside regional design characteristics. Eighteenth-century examples often feature hand-planed surfaces and pegged mortise and tenon joints, whereas later revival pieces show uniform machinery milling.

Are these pieces made entirely of oak?

While oak is the primary material used for the main framework, tabletops, and drawer fronts, makers frequently integrated other native timbers. Elm and secondary softwoods often appear in internal partitions, drawer linings, or backing boards.
