How do I date a framed oak picture?

Dating relies upon the construction style of the wooden frame, the backing materials, and the artistic medium of the enclosed work. Examining the fixings, glass type, and any inscriptions on the reverse provides further chronological markers.

What subjects appear in these artworks?

The subjects range widely from pastoral landscapes and sporting scenes to naive portraits and architectural interiors. Historical prints and topographical views also feature prominently across the selection.

Are the frames original to the artwork?

Many pieces retain their period frames, such as dedicated Victorian or Edwardian surrounds that match the age of the picture. Certain listings specify original framing houses or period mounting styles.

How should I care for antique oak frames?

Keep wooden frames away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent the oak from splitting or warping. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid chemical polishes that might damage the historical timber finish.
