Where should I place a salon chair?

A brown mahogany salon chair suits a drawing room, bedroom, or quiet reading corner where its decorative woodwork remains visible. These pieces function well as accent seating alongside larger sofas. Because many salon chairs feature low profiles and delicate frames, they work best in lighter traffic areas rather than heavy daily use.

How do I date a mahogany chair?

Dating relies on examining the timber characteristics, upholstery style, and construction methods. Victorian pieces often display heavier proportions and balloon backs, while Edwardian examples frequently incorporate delicate wood inlay. Comparing the stretcher placement and leg forms against documented period styles helps narrow the decade of manufacture.

Can I use these chairs for dining?

Dining chairs and side chairs listed under this category provide appropriate height and sturdy frames for dining tables. Salon armchairs and low parlour seats are designed for lounging rather than upright dining. Check the seat height and arm clearance before pairing low salon seating with standard dining tables.

What is the difference between Edwardian and Victorian chairs?

Victorian chairs tend to feature heavier mahogany frames, deeper button-backed upholstery, and sculptural balloon or spoon shapes. They prioritise robust comfort and dark, rich wood tones. Edwardian pieces generally present lighter proportions, frequent satinwood and boxwood inlay, and brighter geometric or floral motifs inspired by earlier revival styles.
