How do I clean the glass on framed paper artwork?

Use a soft cloth slightly dampened with a mild glass cleaner, applying the liquid to the cloth rather than spraying directly onto the frame. This prevents moisture from seeping beneath the rebate and damaging the paper or backing. Take care near antique wooden frames, as harsh chemicals can strip historical finishes. Wipe gently and dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.

Where should I hang watercolours in my home?

Select an interior wall that receives indirect lighting away from direct sunlight. Ultraviolet rays fade watercolours and alter pigment stability over time. Avoid placing these pieces in damp environments such as kitchens or unventilated bathrooms. Stable humidity levels protect both the paper support and the wooden frame.

Can I replace the backing board on an antique drawing?

Original backing boards provide historical context and should be preserved whenever possible. If replacement becomes necessary for conservation reasons, use acid-free materials to prevent chemical degradation of the paper. Consult a professional paper conservator before making alterations to nineteenth-century or earlier mountings. Proper support prevents sagging and creasing of the sheet.

How do I identify the period of a framed engraving?

Examine the paper texture, watermark and plate mark left by the printing press. Hand-laid paper typically displays fine vertical lines when held up to the light. Typography, costume details and framing style offer additional clues to the era of production. Compare these elements with documented examples from the same century.
