How do I date a brass reading desk lamp?

Dating relies on examining the switch mechanisms, wiring channels, casting styles, and stylistic markers such as Edwardian reeding or Art Deco geometric lines. Reference periods generally span from the nineteenth century through the 1930s. Heavier cast brass elements and classical columns typically suggest Victorian or Edwardian origins, whilst adjustable counterbalanced arms and clip-on formats point firmly towards the 1920s and 1930s.

Were these lamps originally electric?

Many surviving examples began life as oil lamps, gas fixtures, or candleholders before undergoing later conversion to electricity. Converted pieces often retain original burners, reservoirs, or wick adjusters alongside modern internal wiring. Original electric models from the early twentieth century generally feature distinct switch placements and heavier brass cord grips integrated directly into the lampholder.

How do adjustable reading lamps work?

Adjustable models utilise mechanical joints, pivot screws, counterweights, or sliding stems to alter the height and angle of the light source. These functional elements allowed users to direct task lighting precisely over a desk or reading surface. Maintenance of these moving parts requires checking that tension screws and knuckle joints hold their position securely without slipping.

What is a Pullman lamp?

A Pullman lamp is a compact, robust lighting fixture originally engineered for use in railway sleeping cars or marine cabins where space was strictly limited. Their secure wall brackets and sturdy construction made them ideal for tight environments. In domestic settings, these pieces function effectively as versatile wall-mounted or desk-placed task lights.
