What is a brass mounted leather box?

It is a wooden box covered in leather and fitted with brass hardware, designed for holding writing materials or jewellery. These pieces date from the Victorian era and reflect the practical storage needs of the nineteenth century.

How were these boxes used?

Writing boxes held paper, ink and nibs for correspondence, while jewellery boxes stored personal valuables. Both types were portable, allowing owners to keep their essential items organised at home or during travel.

How do I date a Victorian box?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, materials and construction techniques typical of the nineteenth century. Pieces from this era often carry specific hardware designs and interior layouts characteristic of Victorian manufacturing.

How do I care for leather and brass?

Keep the items away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to protect the leather and wood. Gentle dusting of the brass mounts maintains the metalwork without stripping its natural aged appearance.
