What tools come in a set?

A standard companion set usually includes a shovel, a poker, and tongs for managing fuel and ash. Many configurations also provide a standing rack or umbrella-style holder to keep the implements upright. Additional pieces such as fire dogs or companion stands sometimes accompany the core tools to form a complete hearth arrangement.

Dating relies on stylistic clues, manufacturing techniques, and material combinations seen across different periods. Victorian examples often display heavier cast brass work, while Regency pieces frequently pair gilt brass with refined steel. Design movements like Arts and Crafts or Aesthetic Movement introduce distinct linear or organic motifs that help narrow the production era.

Are these tools usable today?

Most antique brass and steel fireplace tools remain sturdy enough for regular hearth maintenance. The combination of forged steel shafts and solid brass handles was built for practical domestic labour. Care should be taken with delicate gilt finishes or decorative cast brass stands, which are better suited for display alongside an active fire.

What is the difference between brass and steel?

Brass was chosen for handles, stands, and decorative elements due to its warm appearance and resistance to corrosion in damp rooms. Steel and iron were reserved for the working shafts, tips, and blades that faced direct heat and heavy wear. Many period sets combine both metals to balance ornamental appeal with structural durability.
