How were tallboys used historically?

These tall pieces served as primary bedroom furniture for storing clothing, linens, and personal valuables securely within multiple stacked drawers. The upper sections often held smaller items while deep lower drawers accommodated bulky garments. Cabinetmakers built them tall to utilise vertical wall space in domestic chambers without occupying excessive floor area.

How do I date a tallboy?

Dating relies on examining timber choices, construction techniques, hardware styles, and overall aesthetic proportions relative to known periods. Pieces from the 18th century often feature hand-cut dovetails and native hardwoods like oak and walnut. Later Victorian and Edwardian examples introduce machine-sawn elements, different secondary woods, and revived historical styling motifs.

Where should I place a tallboy?

A tallboy requires a stable wall position in a bedroom or dressing room where its height can be appreciated without crowding the ceiling. Because these pieces are exceptionally top-heavy, secure anchoring to the wall is essential for safety. Allow sufficient clearance around the drawers so they pull out fully without obstruction from nearby furniture.
