Boxed Silver Cigarette Box
When you search for a boxed silver cigarette box, you are looking for a pocket case or table receptacle meant to hold smokes in style.
Boxed Silver Cigarette Box
A boxed silver cigarette box encompasses pocket cases, table boxes, and larger smoking caskets designed to house tobacco safely. You will encounter various forms on this page, spanning flat pocket cases with spring-loaded lids and heavy table boxes lined with timber.
The objects date across the nineteenth, twentieth, and mid-century periods, capturing shifts in design from Victorian ornamentation to clean Art Deco lines. Many originate from British makers, alongside continental European, Russian, Asian, and Ottoman workshops.
These items frequently double as trinket or card boxes today, reflecting how modern homes repurpose smoking accessories. Whether styled in an Edwardian floral scroll pattern or a minimalist mid-century shape, each piece serves as a tactile desktop or vanity object.
How they were made
Silversmiths utilised sterling or continental silver grades, often hammering, stamping, or casting the metal into rigid forms. Many table pieces combine solid silver mounts with wooden bodies like oak or Karelian birch, providing internal structure and weight.
Surface decoration relies heavily on hand engraving, engine-turned basket weave patterns, and applied coloured enamel. Certain examples incorporate silver gilt interiors, niello inlay, or precious cabochon gemstones to elevate the visual detail.
Internal elements such as wooden linings, cedar dividers, and snug-fitting hinges required precise carpentry alongside metalwork. Makers applied hallmarks to certify the silver standard and trace the origin of the workshop.

What varies in quality
The caliber of a boxed silver cigarette box depends on the crispness of the hand engraving and the integrity of any applied enamel work. Superior examples display deep, deliberate chasing and flawless vitreous enamel free from chipping or restoration.
Mechanical precision dictates much of the value, visible in how smoothly the lid springs open and how tightly the box shuts. Heavy gauge silver plate or solid construction provides a satisfying heft compared to thin, easily dented alternatives.

Boxed Silver Cigarette Box: Frequently Asked Questions
How were silver cigarette boxes used?
These boxes sat on dining tables, desks, or smoking stands to offer cigarettes to guests in a formal setting. Pocket versions travelled in waistcoats or handbags to protect delicate paper cigarettes from being crushed.
Over time, owners adopted them for storing visiting cards, stamps, or small jewellery pieces. Their presence added an element of refined ritual to daily social habits.
Are these boxes safe for modern cigarettes?
Most antique pocket boxes were made for shorter, narrower cigarettes or hand-rolled varieties common in the early twentieth century. Standard modern filter cigarettes often prove too long or wide to fit properly inside vintage compartments.
Table boxes offer more generous interior space, easily accommodating various sizes of cigars or modern smokes. Checking the internal dimensions helps determine whether a piece suits practical modern storage.
How can I tell the period?
Examining the hallmarks stamped on the metal provides the most accurate date and origin for British and many European pieces. Assay office marks and date letters point directly to the year of manufacture.
Stylistic cues also reveal the era, such as geometric motifs indicating Art Deco design or foliate scrolls pointing toward the Edwardian or Victorian periods. Material combinations, like shagreen or specific enamelling techniques, further anchor the piece in time.
