What were black marble top pedestals used for?

These tables served various domestic purposes, including holding table lamps, displaying decorative vases, and supporting potted plants or jardinieres in parlours and reception rooms. Smaller versions frequently functioned as bedside cabinets or occasional tables in bedrooms and drawing rooms.

How do I care for a marble top?

Clean the stone surface regularly with a soft, damp cloth and avoid acidic cleaners or harsh chemicals that can etch the polish. Use coasters under glasses and felt pads under heavy objects to prevent scratching the polished finish.

How do I identify a French Empire design?

French Empire pieces typically feature dark mahogany or ebonised wood, architectural columns, and classical proportions. They often include gilt brass mounts or restrained decorative elements. The style draws heavily on ancient Roman and Greek forms, favouring symmetry and solid construction.

Are these pedestals sturdy enough for heavy items?

The substantial weight of the marble top combined with a solid wood or cast iron column provides a stable base for most lamps and plants. The overall stability depends on the tightness of the central fixings and the width of the base.
