How were asian altar tables used?

These tables originally stood against walls in ancestral halls or temples to hold ceremonial offerings, incense burners, and ritual vessels. Domestic households later adopted them as display furniture for prized possessions. Today, the elongated proportions and narrow depth make them well-suited for hallways, living spaces, and behind sofas. They function effectively as display surfaces for lamps, ceramics, and books.

What is the difference between an altar table and a console table?

Traditional altar tables typically feature distinctive upturned flanges at the short ends of the tabletop and recessed leg placements beneath high decorated aprons. These design traits originate from temple architecture. Console tables share the narrow rectangular format but usually feature flat tops and more conventional structural framing. Many pieces bridge both categories depending on regional workshop traditions.

How do I identify elm wood furniture?

Elm furniture exhibits a prominent, swirling grain pattern with a fibrous texture that accepts wear gracefully. Regional Chinese workshops favoured elm for domestic tables, benches, and sideboards due to its toughness. Over time, old elm develops a warm patina that varies from pale honey tones to deep amber brown. Certain regional varieties, such as locust wood elm, show distinctive figuring across large plank surfaces.

How do I care for a lacquered table?

Lacquered surfaces require protection from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to prevent fading or lifting of the finish. Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth rather than using chemical polishes. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to protect the underlying wooden substrate from expanding or contracting. Place felt pads beneath any decorative objects set upon the lacquer.
