What fits inside an art deco case?

These containers accommodated personal items of the period, ranging from loose cigarettes and visiting cards to cosmetics and pocket watches. Their internal layouts reflect the specific daily habits of the interwar traveller and socialite. Larger variations function as display cabinets and bookcases, designed to hold collections of glassware, books, or decorative objects rather than pocket items.

How do I date an art deco case?

Metal items such as silver boxes and compacts usually feature hallmarks and date letters stamped directly into the metal. Consulting assay office records provides the exact year of manufacture. Furniture and travel luggage rely on stylistic cues, construction methods, and materials like walnut veneers or leaded glass to establish a timeframe within the early twentieth century.

Are these cases waterproof?

Most interwar containers were built to protect contents from dust and handling rather than moisture. Hinged lids and clasps close securely, but lack modern rubber gaskets or waterproof seals. Leather vanity items and fabric linings require careful environmental control to prevent degradation from humidity.

How should I clean silver and enamel cases?

Sterling silver benefits from gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive pastes that might scratch softer metal surfaces. Enamel sections require mild soap and water rather than chemical solvents to preserve the coloured glaze. Wooden cabinets and leather vanity cases need dry dusting and occasional conditioning appropriate for vintage organic materials.
