Where did people place these cupboards?

Bedside cabinets and pot cupboards found their natural home next to sleeping quarters to hold chamber pots and small personal items. Corner cupboards and wall-hung variants utilised awkward angles in parlours and dining rooms to maximise storage without crowding floor space. Larger linen presses and wardrobes took up positions in bedrooms and landings to contain household textiles and garments. Sideboards and chiffoniers operated in dining spaces to serve food and store tableware.

How do I distinguish Georgian from Victorian pieces?

Georgian items, spanning the eighteenth century, typically display understated elegance with heavy reliance on solid timber construction and subtle proportions. Makers during this period favoured clean architectural lines and simple brass handles. Victorian pieces from the mid-nineteenth century often introduce bolder architectural elements, such as flared cornices and heavily figured veneers. These later items frequently incorporate machine-sawn components and deeper mouldings.

What is a pot cupboard?

A pot cupboard is a small bedside cabinet historically designed to enclose a chamber pot behind a single door. These compact units usually feature a flat top surface for a lamp or water jug. As domestic sanitation evolved, these versatile small cabinets transitioned into general bedside tables and lamp stands. Their enclosed shelving makes them practical for modern bedside storage.

How do I care for mahogany furniture?

Mahogany requires stable indoor humidity away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer lifting. Maintaining a consistent room climate preserves the original animal glues and polished finish. Routine dusting with a dry, soft cloth keeps the surface clean without requiring heavy polishes. Periodic application of traditional wax feeds the wood and maintains its natural lustre.
