What is a canterbury?

A canterbury is a low wooden stand featuring several upright divisions designed to hold newspapers, periodicals, or sheet music. Many examples include a small drawer at the base for storage and rest on short legs fitted with castors.

How were newspaper holders used?

These stands sat beside seating areas in parlours and libraries to keep daily newspapers and magazines organised and accessible. They allowed households to store unbound reading material neatly off tables and desks.

How do I date a wooden newspaper holder?

Dating relies on timber selection, structural style, and decorative details like inlay or leg turning. Georgian and Regency pieces show classical proportions, while Edwardian and Arts and Crafts versions favour simpler oak construction.

Can these hold modern magazines?

Most antique canterburys and magazine racks accommodate modern periodicals within their standard wooden divisions. Heavier folio stands offer space for larger publications and oversized newspapers.
