How are antique draughts sets stored?

Most sets reside in dedicated wooden boxes featuring sliding lids or compartmented interiors. These enclosures protected the turned pieces from loss between gaming sessions. Heavier travelling versions utilised locking mechanisms to secure the counters during transit across households or journeys.

What woods were used for counters?

Boxwood provided the pale counters in standard sets, offering a smooth surface that handled frequent sliding across boards. Dark counters relied on ebony or similarly dense dark timbers. Turners selected these contrasting materials so players could distinguish pieces clearly under candlelight or oil lamps.

Are original boxes common?

Original boxes appear alongside many surviving sets, though loose counters surface frequently on their own. Fitted interiors indicate higher quality production from the nineteenth century. Complete sets retaining every single wooden counter remain sought after by collectors of parlour games.

Dating relies on the style of the timber box, the turning profile of the counters, and any accompanying maker labels. Nineteenth-century examples often display simpler turned ridges compared to later twentieth-century iterations. Materials also offer clues, as early Victorian sets leaned heavily on boxwood and rosewood construction.
