What is an antique wax seal pendant?

An antique wax seal pendant is a piece of jewellery created from a functional desk seal or watch fob used historically to stamp correspondence in hot wax. They are now worn suspended from chains as charms or pendants. These pieces typically date from the Georgian and Victorian eras, combining precious metals with carved hardstones like carnelian and bloodstone.

How were these seals originally used?

Owners pressed the engraved stone matrix into melted sealing wax to close letters and secure private documents. The unique design served as a signature or a mark of identity. Most were attached to watch chains or ribbons before being adapted as pendants for daily wear.

How do I tell Georgian seals from Victorian ones?

Georgian seals often feature heavier neoclassical styling, gilt metal, or lower-carat gold casings paired with deeply carved stones and classical motifs. They tend to look hand-finished and rustic. Victorian examples frequently utilise 9ct gold and display more varied imagery, including animals, names, and sentimental symbols set into bright carnelian or bloodstone.

Can these pendants still be used to stamp wax?

Yes, provided the intaglio stone remains intact and undamaged, the pendant can impress designs into sealing wax just as it did historically. The carved stone is durable enough for occasional use. Collectors often test the engravings this way to read reversed lettering or hidden mottoes.
