How do I choose the right size screen?

Measure the width and height of the fireplace opening to ensure the screen extends beyond the hearth parameters for adequate protection. Consider whether a rigid flat panel or a folding multi-section design suits the spatial constraints of the room. Account for fireplace accessories like fenders that might sit forward of the hearth opening when calculating placement depth.

Were these screens used for heat or sparks?

Hearth screens served multiple domestic functions, operating as spark guards for safety, draught excluders, and physical deflectors of intense open fire radiation. Some designs also provided privacy or protected feminine complexions from excessive heat. Decorative panels often doubled as summer fireboards when the hearth was not in active seasonal use.

How do I clean brass spark screens?

Dust the wire mesh and metal frame regularly with a dry cloth to prevent soot accumulation from settling into crevices. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patination from older brass and copper surfaces. Gentle cleaning with mild soap and warm water suffices for most stable metallic finishes, followed by immediate drying.
