What is an antique chamber candlestick?

A chamber candlestick is a short candleholder featuring a wide tray base and a loop handle. People carried them by hand to light their way through dark hallways and rooms before electricity. The wide saucer caught any dripping wax while in motion. Sets of these were kept in hallways for evening use.

How do I date silver plated lighting?

Dating silver plated lighting relies on stylistic clues, manufacturing techniques and any stamped maker marks. Pieces often reflect the prevailing architectural revival styles of their period. Looking closely at the construction of the base and the weight of the metal helps place items within the eighteenth, nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.

Are these lamps originally electric?

Many table lamps listed as antique were originally designed for candles or oil and were converted to electricity at a later date. Metal columns and urns lend themselves well to rewiring. Original candlesticks often remain unmodified, while others have been fitted for modern bulbs while retaining their period bases.

What is the difference between sterling and plate?

Sterling silver is solid precious metal throughout, marked with official hallmarks indicating its purity. Silver plate consists of a thin layer of silver applied over a base metal such as copper or brass. Plated items offered the appearance of solid silver at a fraction of the cost, making them common in domestic lighting.
