Are hallmarks always present on the silver?

British pieces generally feature full hallmarks stamped directly onto the silver mounts, indicating the maker's mark, assay office, and date letter. Continental or smaller items might bear abbreviated sterling stamps or maker initials instead of full office marks. Faint or rubbed marks are common on older items due to decades of gentle polishing. Examining the metal alongside the style of the glass helps establish an accurate period.

Can I use these decanters for serving wine?

Many antique decanters remain fully functional for serving wine or spirits, provided the interior glass is clean and odourless. Checking the stopper for a snug fit ensures liquids stay fresh during use. Avoid pouring very hot liquids into antique glass, as sudden thermal changes can cause historic vessels to crack. Hand washing is essential to preserve both the glass clarity and the secure fit of the metal collar.

What caused the popularity of silver mounted glass?

The Victorian and Edwardian periods saw a rise in domestic entertaining, leading to a demand for decorative tableware that displayed wealth and refinement. Combining sparkling cut crystal with gleaming silver offered a striking visual contrast suited to formal dining and parlour rituals. Advances in industrial glass production alongside traditional silversmithing techniques made these luxury items accessible to a growing middle class. Travelling vanity sets and desktop items also became essential accessories for the carriage and study.
