How do I date an antique picture of children?

Dating relies on clothing styles, hairstyles, framing materials and any inscribed signatures or dates on the reverse. Examining the backing boards, fixings and paper types also helps narrow the period. Paintings and prints often display stylistic traits characteristic of Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian eras, aligning with the fashion worn by the young sitters.

Are these works original paintings or prints?

The selection includes both unique hand-painted works and period prints. Descriptions specify whether an item is an oil on canvas, watercolour, pastel sketch or an engraved reproduction. Originals feature visible brushwork and pigment texture, whereas prints display dot patterns, ink layers or plate marks from the printing press.

How should I hang and care for these pieces?

Keep works on paper and canvas away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and discolouration of the pigments. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to protect wooden frames and organic materials. Use sturdy picture wire and appropriate wall fixings suited to the weight of the frame, particularly heavier giltwood or oil paintings.

Why are some children depicted with animals or toys?

Genre scenes and portraiture frequently incorporated pets like dogs, rabbits or ponies, alongside toys such as battledore and shuttlecock. These elements added narrative interest and symbolised gentility or playful innocence. Artists used these props to keep young sitters engaged during long portrait sittings while reflecting contemporary ideals of childhood.
