How should I display antique paper art safely?

Keep framed pieces away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of watercolours and inks. Maintain stable room humidity to protect the paper fibres from warping or developing foxing spots over time. Use UV-filtering glazing when reframing and ensure acid-free mounts prevent chemical transfer onto the artwork. Professional framing protects the structural integrity of antique sheets.

What is the difference between an etching and an engraving?

An etching relies on acid to bite lines into a metal plate, resulting in free-flowing strokes with varied depths. Engravings utilise a sharp steel tool called a burin to cut lines directly into the metal. Engravings typically display sharper, more rigid lines with uniform width, whereas etchings exhibit softer, more painterly qualities.

How can I tell the period of a paper artwork?

Examine the watermark in the paper, the framing style, and the clothing or hairstyles of any figures depicted. Handwriting on the reverse often provides dated signatures or inscriptions. Stylistic conventions of the period, such as Georgian palette choices or Victorian framing methods, offer further chronological clues.

What does foxing mean on old paper?

Foxing refers to the small brownish spots and patches that commonly appear on antique paper due to chemical reactions over decades. It is typically caused by iron impurities in the paper reacting with dampness. While light foxing is natural in works of great age, extensive spotting can obscure the artist's original ink or watercolour lines.
