What is an antique oushak floor rug?

An antique oushak floor rug is a hand-knotted carpet originating from the town of Usak and surrounding regions in Western Turkey, dating from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These pieces are recognised by their large scales and muted pastel colour palettes. They serve as decorative floor coverings for substantial rooms, utilising wool and cotton to create durable surfaces with distinctive geometric and floral motifs.

How do I date an antique oushak carpet?

Dating relies on stylistic indicators, structural materials, and documented production eras spanning from the Victorian period through the 1920s. Nineteenth-century examples often exhibit specific regional colour choices like faded pinks and soft greens. Examining the weave density and the handling of the wool helps place a carpet within the appropriate historical decade.

Where were these rugs made?

These rugs were produced in Western Turkey, specifically in and around the historic carpet-weaving centre of Usak, as well as nearby Kula and Ghiordes districts. The region has a long-standing Ottoman heritage in textile production. Weavers in these Anatolian towns supplied both local markets and international trade, resulting in the diverse surviving formats seen today.

How should I care for an antique rug?

Care involves gentle vacuuming without rotating brush heads to protect the wool pile, alongside professional cleaning when necessary. Placing the rug away from direct, harsh sunlight preserves the soft pastel dyes. Using a suitable underlay prevents sliding and reduces friction between the cotton foundation and the floor.
