Are antique ormolu desk lights safe to use?

Most antique lamps are rewired during their history to meet modern electrical safety standards while preserving the historic body. Buyers should inspect the internal wiring and consult an electrician to ensure the vintage metal components are correctly earthed.

How do I clean an ormolu lamp?

Dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth is the best method for maintaining the gilded surface without causing abrasion. Water, chemical polishes, and abrasive cleaners will strip the historic gilt layer from the bronze.

What is the difference between ormolu and brass?

Ormolu consists of a bronze substrate coated in gold, resulting in a rich, warm yellow lustre that ages with a subtle patina. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc throughout its entire mass, typically appearing brighter and less deeply golden than mercury-gilded bronze.

Can I replace the lampshade?

Replacing the shade is straightforward provided the fitter matches the original gallery or harp dimensions of the lamp base. Silk and fabric shades are standard choices that echo historical lighting aesthetics.
