How do I date an antique mahogany arm chair?

Dating relies on stylistic shifts, timber characteristics and construction methods observed across Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras. Examining the legs, arm supports and any decorative inlay helps narrow down the period of manufacture. Cabinet-making techniques evolved over the centuries, moving from heavy carved frames to lighter inlaid Edwardian designs and utilitarian office chairs.

Were these chairs used at desks?

Many mahogany armchairs served specifically as desk or library chairs, particularly those upholstered in leather. These versions offered comfort and mobility for writing and reading. Open armchairs and carvers also functioned as occasional seating in salons, parlours and around dining tables.

What is a Gainsborough chair?

A Gainsborough chair is a wide, upholstered mahogany armchair featuring open padded arms and short legs. They originated in the eighteenth century for use in libraries and studies. These chairs provide a generous seating area while maintaining a lighter visual profile than fully enclosed wingbacks.

Mahogany frames benefit from occasional polishing with traditional wax to maintain the sheen of the timber. Avoid placing timber furniture in direct sunlight or near heat sources. Leather upholstery requires regular conditioning to prevent drying and cracking, keeping the hide supple over decades of use.
