What were antique leather cases originally used for?

These containers served to protect personal belongings, scientific instruments, and valuable garments during transit by carriage, train, or ship. Owners relied on them to keep delicate items like timepieces, medical tools, and hats safe from damage. Different professions and social classes required specific designs, ranging from doctors' medical sets and military compass holders to large luggage trunks for extended travel.

How should I clean and maintain old leather?

Maintenance involves gentle cleaning with a soft, dry cloth to remove surface dust without dampening the material. Applying specialised leather balms helps preserve the suppleness of aged hide and prevents cracking. Keep these items away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to protect both the exterior leather and any internal fabric linings.

How do I identify the period of a leather case?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, hardware styles, and any accompanying hallmarks on silver mounts or locks. Victorian and Edwardian examples often feature specific brass lock designs and rich, hand-tooled finishes. Internal textiles, maker stamps, and the overall typography used on branding labels also provide clear clues to the decade of manufacture.

Can I use an antique suitcase for modern travel?

While these pieces possess sturdy wooden frames and thick hide construction, they generally lack the maneuverability and standardised sizing of modern luggage. Most collectors prefer to display them as interior decor or utilise them for light storage at home. Historic locks and vintage hinges may also not withstand the rigorous handling associated with contemporary transit systems.
