What is a bergere chair?

A bergere chair is a traditional upholstered armchair featuring enclosed sides, traditionally filled with cane work or solid upholstery. It provides a comfortable, enclosed seat designed for libraries and drawing rooms. Most surviving examples utilise mahogany or oak frames paired with loose leather cushions. Their design balances structural support with a relaxed, low profile.

How do I identify a Regency bergere?

Regency bergere chairs date from the early nineteenth century and typically display classical proportions, dark mahogany or simulated rosewood finishes, and sabre legs. They often incorporate finely turned arm supports and brass details. Look for crisp joinery and traditional caning panels set into the wooden frame. These details distinguish true period pieces from later Edwardian revival copies.

Are these chairs comfortable for daily use?

These chairs were built for extended reading and study, offering supportive backrests and wide seats. The addition of fitted leather cushions provides a resilient surface for contemporary living. Their ergonomic proportions make them practical for everyday seating in studies or living spaces. The sturdy hardwood frames ensure lasting stability under regular use.

How do I care for leather and cane?

Leather upholstery benefits from periodic conditioning to maintain its suppleness and prevent drying. Keep the leather away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight. Caned panels require gentle dusting and occasional light moisture to keep the rattan flexible. Avoid placing heavy loads against the side panels to protect the woven lattice.
