How do tantalus locks work?

The locking bar crosses over the stoppers of the decanters, preventing them from being lifted out of the frame. Turning the key releases the metal bar so it can swing down or lift clear. Original keys are uncommon because many were lost over generations of use. Replacement locks and keys require specialist fitting to match the period mechanism.

Can I use the decanters for serving spirits?

Heavy cut crystal decanters function well for holding and pouring spirits during gatherings. Check the interior for cloudiness or residue before filling. Glass stoppers should be matched to their original bottles to ensure a proper seal that prevents evaporation. Avoid dishwashers, relying instead on gentle hand washing.

How do I date an oak tantalus?

Victorian examples often feature dark oak with robust brass mounts and deep hand-cut decanter patterns. Edwardian pieces tend to show lighter oak tones and refined silver-plated hardware. Maker marks stamped onto the metal handles or lock plates provide the most reliable dating evidence.

What is a games box combination?

Many tantalus frames incorporate lidded compartments beneath or beside the decanters to hold playing cards, dice, and gaming pieces. These multifunction items served as complete social stations for smoking rooms and parlours. The interior velvet or leather linings often show wear that reflects active use during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
