These vessels held powders, pins, trinkets and cosmetics on dressing tables in bedrooms and boudoirs. They served both a practical function for daily grooming and a decorative role in displaying luxury materials.

How can I tell the period of a glass box?

Dating relies upon silver hallmarks, maker marks, and stylistic indicators such as Art Deco geometric lines or Victorian floral motifs. Material choices like heavy cut crystal or specific enamel colours also align with distinct manufacturing eras.

Are the lids usually made of silver?

Many lids consist of sterling silver, often featuring Birmingham or London assay office hallmarks. Others utilise gilt bronze, brass, or simple glass stoppers depending on the style and date of the piece.

How do I care for antique glass and enamel?

Clean glass components gently with mild soapy water while protecting silver and enamel surfaces from moisture. Avoid submerging pieces with fitted metal mounts or fragile guilloché work to prevent damage to adhesives.
