How do I fit a modern mattress?

Many antique french carved beds predate standard modern sizing, meaning bespoke or custom-made mattresses are frequently required to ensure a proper fit within the historic wooden rails. Consulting your dealer regarding internal dimensions before purchasing ensures your chosen mattress rests securely on modern slats or integrated supports.

Can these beds be easily dismantled?

Most nineteenth and early twentieth-century bedsteads utilise traditional bolt-in iron side rails and tenon joints designed for straightforward dismantling and transport. Careful handling during assembly protects the delicate hand-carved joints and ornamental crests from accidental strain or fracturing.

How do I care for the wood?

Maintain polished walnut and oak surfaces by applying quality beeswax sparingly and buffing gently with a soft, lint-free cloth to preserve the natural lustre. Avoid placing antique timber frames in direct sunlight or near direct heat sources to prevent the historic wood from drying out or splitting.

What is a daybed used for?

Historically, daybeds served a dual purpose as daytime seating in salons or boudoirs and as occasional sleeping quarters for resting during the afternoon. In modern homes, they function well as versatile lounge seating or guest beds in studies, sunrooms, and larger guest bedrooms.
