What is an empire bed?

An antique empire bed is a nineteenth-century style framework defined by neoclassical architectural lines, grand proportions, and symmetrical proportions derived from French imperial design. These pieces typically showcase dark timbers like mahogany or walnut, frequently accented with cast brass or ormolu mounts.

How do I fit a modern mattress?

Many antique empire beds were built to continental dimensions, which differ slightly from standard modern UK or US mattress sizes. Buyers often utilise custom mattress makers to ensure a precise fit within the wooden side rails. Internal slat supports can also be adapted by a specialist restorer to accommodate modern base requirements securely.

Yes, twin setups and matching pairs of single beds occasionally appear alongside larger double and king-sized sleeping furniture. These matched pairs suit guest rooms or larger master suites seeking symmetrical arrangement. Matching bedroom furniture suites containing cabinets and side tables also feature within the selection.

How do I care for the timber?

Maintenance involves regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and the occasional application of appropriate furniture wax to nourish the antique mahogany or walnut. Avoiding direct sunlight and maintaining stable room humidity protects the wood veneers and delicate parquetry. Polishing metal mounts should be done with care to preserve the original patinated finish without damaging adjacent wood surfaces.
