What is a bergere seat?

A bergere seat is a closed armchair or sofa featuring solid wooden sides filled with woven cane or upholstery. It originated as a comfortable domestic seat for reading and relaxing. The design provides a deeper and more enclosed space than standard open armchairs. Most examples include a loose seat cushion for added comfort.

How do I care for antique cane?

Antique cane requires moderate humidity to prevent the natural fibres from becoming brittle and snapping under tension. Regular dusting keeps the mesh clean and free of abrasive particles. Avoid placing these chairs near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. Proper conditioning prevents the woven strands from drying out over time.

Are these chairs comfortable for daily use?

These seats were originally built for relaxed sitting and reading in libraries and drawing rooms. The addition of down or feather cushions on the base provides substantial support. Because the frames are deep and angled, they encourage a relaxed posture. Their ergonomic shape makes them practical for modern living spaces.

How do I distinguish French and English styles?

French examples often display carved show-wood frames, painted finishes, and curvilinear Louis styles. They lean towards decorative elegance and lighter proportions. English pieces tend to focus on dense timbers like mahogany and walnut with library applications. Their design prioritizes sturdy construction and classic proportions.
