How do I light an antique pricket candlestick?

Pricket candlesticks require candles with a pre-drilled base hole that pushes directly onto the central metal spike. Modern pillar candles can be adapted by warming the base slightly before pressing them onto the point. Ensure the candle sits level on the spike to prevent uneven burning and wax drips onto the surrounding metal or wood surface.

Can these converted altar lamps be rewired?

Most electrical conversions fitted to antique altar lights can be updated by a qualified electrician to meet current safety standards. Wiring is typically routed through the centre without altering the historic structure. Buyers should consult a professional to check internal components while preserving the exterior brass or wooden body of the piece.

How do I clean antique brass altar lights?

Maintenance requires only gentle dusting with a soft dry cloth to protect the historic surface oxidation and patination. Abrasive polishes should be avoided because they strip away the aged character accumulated over centuries. If cleaning is necessary for hygiene, use mild soapy water on a damp cloth, drying the metal immediately afterwards.

What is the difference between a torchere and a candlestick?

A torchere is a tall floor-standing or large table support built for heavy ceremonial illumination, whereas a standard candlestick is generally smaller and intended for altar or furniture placement. Torcheres often feature substantial turned wooden shafts and tripod bases. Both forms share ecclesiastical origins, but torcheres provide much greater height and architectural presence in a room.
