How do telescopic adjustments work?

Telescopic stems rely on inner and outer brass tubes that slide past one another to alter the height of the shade. A friction fit, side screw or collar holds the inner tube in place once positioned. Over time, internal springs or washers may require adjustment to maintain proper tension so the lamp does not slip downward under its own weight.

Can old oil lamps be used safely?

Many Victorian standard and table oil lamps have been converted to electricity by routing wiring through the original burner assembly or central column. This conversion allows period metalwork to function with modern domestic bulbs. Buyers should inspect the internal wiring and ensure a qualified electrician has checked the insulation, earth connection and lampholder before regular daily use.

Where should I place a standard lamp?

Adjustable floor lamps suit corners of reception rooms or beside reading chairs where directional light is necessary. The height and swivel capabilities allow the beam to project over seating or down onto a surface. Ensure the heavy weighted base sits firmly on level flooring to prevent tipping when the arm extends outward.

What is a student lamp?

Student lamps originated as nineteenth-century task lighting designed for concentrated work at a desk or table. They typically feature a single font or bulb arm mounted on an adjustable vertical stem. These pieces provide focused downward illumination, making them practical for modern workspaces and studies while retaining period character.
