Originally designed in the late 18th century and popular throughout the Victorian era, the canterbury was crafted as a multifarious stand primarily used for holding sheet music, books, or portfolios.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or ebonised timber, featuring joined compartments, turned supports, and often incorporating delicate pierced fretwork or lyre motifs.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting traditional joinery methods, timber oxidisation, hand-turned components, and original hardware such as brass castors or ceramic wheels rather than modern fixings.

This piece can be styled as a functional side table next to a sofa or armchair, utilised to store magazines, books, or vinyl records while adding traditional architectural character to the room.

Maintenance requires dusting with a dry lint-free cloth and periodically applying high-quality beeswax to nourish the timber, avoiding direct sunlight, excessive moisture, and chemical cleaning products.
