Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual Victorian maritime washstand table dates from 1880 and comes in a warm brown teak timber with polished brass hardware. The piece stands on turned legs, fitted with brass side handles on the flanks, and features a vertical hinged lid that opens upwards to reveal a fitted interior with circular basin cutouts and compartments. The wood displays a visible natural grain with warm medium-brown tones, while the brass handles are mounted with small screws on the side panel. Measuring 75.5 cm high, 77.5 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, this compact item functions well as a decorative table or display stand in a study, library, or hallway setting. Buyers can place it against a wall or in a corner to showcase its maritime utility and period character.

FAQs

A maritime campaign washstand is a compact, portable washing table designed specifically for use aboard ships during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These tables feature hinged tops that open to reveal specialized cutouts for securing wash basins, soap dishes, and water pitchers against sea motion.

Ship washstands were primarily constructed from dense, water-resistant hardwoods such as teak or mahogany to withstand marine environments. They frequently incorporate flush-fitting brass hardware, heavy hinges, and side carrying handles to facilitate secure placement in ship cabins.

Authentic naval and merchant vessel washstands show circular and rectangular interior apertures designed for ceramic wash sets. Look for original brass drop handles on the sides, robust hand-cut joinery, and evidence of compact design features tailored for confined nautical spaces.

A teak washstand functions effectively as a distinct console table, hallway accent, or compact home bar when the top is closed. Open, the fitted interior compartments offer creative display options for potted plants, collections, or bathroom accessories.

Maintain teak washstands by periodically wiping the timber with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste to nourish the wood grain. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, clean any brass fittings gently to preserve aged patination, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources.
