Antique Victorian Inlaid Satinwood Sewing Table and Lamp Table

19th century
Description

A superb quality antique Victorian satinwood sewing table of exceptional elegance, beautifully proportioned and displaying exquisite craftsmanship throughout. This delightful piece combines the practicality of a fitted sewing table with the decorative appeal of a refined lamp or occasional table, making it a wonderfully versatile addition to any interior.

The beautifully figured satinwood top has a particularly attractive shaped outline, enhanced by delicate string inlay, a contrasting circular central panel and four decorative circular corner details. The rich golden tones and striking natural grain of the satinwood create a wonderfully warm and sophisticated appearance.

The hinged top opens to reveal a beautifully fitted interior with a removable circular tray, divided compartments and a central compartment with its own lift-off cover, displaying further beautifully figured timber. Beneath the tray is an additional concealed storage space, an ingenious and charming feature that demonstrates the exceptional attention to detail given to this piece.

The deep circular frieze is decorated with finely executed contrasting vertical inlay and retains its keyhole. The table stands on four elegant, slender turned and tapering legs, embellished with delicate linear inlay and united by an exceptionally attractive pierced X-shaped stretcher with a central circular detail. The combination of these graceful proportions, intricate inlay and finely executed construction gives the table a particularly distinguished appearance.

A truly charming and beautifully crafted example of late Victorian cabinetmaking, equally suited for use as an antique sewing table, lamp table or decorative occasional table. Its compact proportions make it ideal for a drawing room, bedroom or elegant sitting room, where its exceptional craftsmanship and wonderful satinwood figuring can be fully appreciated.

Popularised during the nineteenth century, these delicate tables were originally designed for upper-class households as functional furniture for storing needlework, embroidery tools, and thread. Drawing inspiration from earlier Neoclassical and Sheraton designs, Victorian cabinetmakers frequently utilized satinwood and decorative marquetry to produce light, elegant occasional pieces.

These tables typically feature solid hardwood frames veneered with satinwood, known for its fine grain and lustrous golden hue. Decorative details often incorporate contrasting timber inlays such as ebony, rosewood, or boxwood, supported by slim turned or tapered legs and brass fittings.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawers, subtle irregularities in the inlaid wood, and original brass locks or keyholes. The timber will show signs of natural aging, including a rich, mellow patina and slight colour variations across the veneered surfaces.

Due to its slender profile and warm timber tones, a satinwood table functions well as an occasional lamp table alongside upholstered armchairs or positioned within an entrance hall. Pairing the warm satinwood finish with contemporary linen upholstery or neutral walls creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent warping and bleaching of the veneer. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the protective finish and natural sheen.
