A lowboy is a small table with drawers, typically used as a dressing table or side table, originating in the late 17th century and remaining popular through the Georgian period, specifically during the reign of George III from 1760 to 1820.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or oak, often featuring secondary woods like pine or oak for drawer linings. Traditional joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawers and mortise and tenon frames were standard.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the wood patina, hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware or marks from previous fittings, tool marks on secondary woods, and signs of age-appropriate wear and shrinkage.

An antique lowboy functions well as a slim console in an entryway, a compact desk in a home office, or an accent table beneath a mirror, providing warmth and historical contrast to contemporary decor.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and occasionally apply microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish without using modern silicone-based polishes.
