FAQs

A lowboy is a small table with drawers, typically raised on four legs, which originated in the late 17th century and remained popular throughout the 18th century during the Georgian period, often used as a dressing table or side table.

Period lowboys were predominantly constructed from native timbers such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction and pegged mortise and tenon frame joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, hand-beveled drawer bottoms, irregular hand-forged or cast brass hardware, and timber patination consistent with age and natural oxidisation.

An antique lowboy functions effectively as a compact desk in a home office, a hallway console table, or a dressing table in a bedroom, contrasting modern minimalist decor with historical texture.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber without sealing the surface.
