Size: 8ft 0in x 5ft 6in (245 x 168cm).

Antique Yomut Turkmen rug of classic design with octagonal guls.

Circa 1900

The rug has a warm red colour with three full rows of seven octagonal turreted guls, the border is of a classic Yomut Turkmen star design with large elem panels at both ends. A good example of type, with fine weave.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use.

Yomut Turkmen rugs were woven by the Yomut tribe, one of the primary nomadic groups of Central Asia residing near the Caspian Sea. Produced during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these textiles are distinguished by their geometric composition, deep crimson or liver-red ground colours, and repeating tribal emblems known as guls.

Authentic Yomut rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation structure. Dyes were historically derived from natural sources, such as madder root for deep red tones, indigo for navy shades, and natural un-dyed wool for ivory accents, yielding high knot density and durable construction.

Authentic pieces are identified by specific gul forms, such as the kepse or dyrmak motif, set in symmetrical rows. Additional features include a flat-woven hem or elem end panels decorated with small geometric trees or diamonds, natural colour variations known as abrash, and a wool warp and weft.

A classic red Turkmen carpet provides a grounding focal point when paired with dark wood furniture, leather seating, or neutral linen upholstery.
