Fine Belouch Rug, Circa 1880, 1.76m X 1.04m

19th century
Description

The Belouch are one of the oldest Central Asian nomadic tribes who migrated in North-East Persia, Afghanistan and Pakistan. This rug was probably woven in or around Khorassan Province in North-East Persia. It is a very nice example, finely knotted with sheep's wool and goat hair and dates to the end of the 19th century. The fine weave and low clipped pile gives the design great definition. The design appears to have been influenced by Turkoman carpets with its row of gul-like octagons in the field and secondary stepped guls filling the remaining space. The main border is interesting with stylised trees and birds. It is cut at each corner to create spandrels that are filled with latch-hooks. The design feels archaic, and is beautifully executed. Generally good condition. Minor signs of wear and a couple of small old repairs. The ends and selvages are original.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Belouch rugs are hand-woven textiles traditionally crafted by nomadic tribes along the border regions of eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. They are recognised for dark, rich colour palettes and detailed geometric motifs.

Traditional Belouch rugs feature a soft wool pile hand-knotted onto a wool or goat hair warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable dyes derived from plants, roots, and husks create their signature deep red, navy, and brown tones.

Authentic late 19th-century Belouch rugs typically feature a soft, lustrous wool pile, flexible handling, saturated dark colour palettes, and selvedges finished with dark wool or woven goat hair.

Belouch rugs provide visual grounding when positioned on pale timber flooring, layered over large neutral flatweaves, or arranged alongside mid-century and dark timber furniture.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush prevents fibre wear, while prompt spot-cleaning with cold water and periodic professional hand-washing maintains the natural wool oils and structure.
