Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Belouch Tribal Rug to the 1880s.
The fine weave and low clipped pile gives the design great definition. The design appears to have been influenced by Turkoman carpets with its row of gul-like octagons in the field and secondary stepped guls filling the remaining space. The main border is interesting with stylised trees and birds. It is cut at each corner to create spandrels that are filled with latch-hooks. The design feels archaic, and is beautifully executed. Generally good condition. Minor signs of wear and a couple of small old repairs. The ends and selvages are original.
