South Persian Tribal Rug, Circa 1910, 2.00m X 1.44m

1900 - 1920
Description

This pretty wool rug was probably woven by Afshari weavers, an ancient nomadic tribe, around the city of Kirman in South-East Persia at the beginning of the 20th century. It has a cotton foundation with fine handspun wool and a very fine weave. The colours are very soft and well matched. The design has great tribal character with an ivory diamond medallion that is decorated with a tribal gul, surrounded by other geometric ornaments. Note the lovely spandrels with repeating diamonds in blue, and the very pretty ivory stylised floral borders. The whole composition is very delightful, and has both a charming naivete in the drawing whilst being quite formal. This lovely rug has survived the generations in very good condition, with original selvages and ends and a soft velvety pile.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

South Persian tribal rugs, created by nomadic weavers such as the Qashqai and Khamseh confederations, are distinguished by geometric medallions, stylized flora and fauna, and vibrant natural dyes. These textiles reflect tribal weaving traditions passed down through generations, combining functional utility with artistic heritage.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile on a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable dyes derived from madder root, indigo, and walnut husks are commonly employed to produce long-lasting colours.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied knots visible on the underside, slight asymmetrical variations in weave density, and natural abrash colour variations within the yarn. The design typically features bold geometric motifs, stepped medallions, and detailed multi-banded borders rather than precise floral scrolling.

An antique tribal rug functions as a grounding element in contemporary, bohemian, or traditional interiors. Positioning it under minimalist furniture creates visual contrast, while pairing it with mid-century or classic wooden furniture enhances textural warmth.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to protect the wool pile. Rotate the rug annually to balance sun exposure and foot traffic, and clean spills immediately by blotting with a damp cloth and mild wool detergent.
