Fine Persian Karaja Carpet, Circa 1880, 3.32m X 2.85m

19th century
Description

Among the many towns and villages of the Azerbaijan region of North-West Persia where carpets were woven in the 19th century, Karaja weavings often have a very individual character. This wonderful carpet is a fine example. Everything about it exudes refinement and skill. The wool quality is exceptional, the weave is fine and the dyes are simply exquisite. Add to that an highly decorative all-over repeat design of stylised palmettes and leaves on a ruby red field, framed by an elegant matching sapphire blue border and one has a really special carpet. Note also the squarish format which would make it ideal for many decorative settings, both period and contemporary. Professionally cleaned and in excellent condition. Minor restoration to the ends, otherwise in very good original condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karaja carpets originate from the village of Karaja in Northwest Persia, situated near the Heriz region. Produced throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these rugs are characterized by distinct geometric medallion compositions, bold field colours, and stylised botanical motifs influenced by regional weaving traditions.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. Saturated red, blue, and terracotta shades were traditionally achieved using natural plant and mineral dyes applied prior to knotting.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle colour variations known as abrash, caused by small batches of vegetable-dyed wool. Additional indicators include hand-bound side selvedges, slight structural asymmetries inherent to hand-loom weaving, and light uniform pile wear consistent with age.

A substantial geometric carpet serves as an anchoring foundation in living rooms, dining rooms, or large halls. Contrast the warm red and deep navy tones against neutral walls, pairing the textile with either classic dark wood furnishings or clean-lined contemporary seating.

Vacuum gently without using a high-powered rotating brush bar to prevent fibre pull. Rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear and sun exposure, insert a high-quality rug underlay underneath for cushion support, and rely on professional specialist cleaning for spot and deep maintenance.
