Antique Victorian Silver Pounce Pot

19th century
Description

A wonderful, classically shaped solid sterling silver pounce pot, dating from the end of the Victoria era.

It is clearly hallmarked on the side for London 1887. The maker's mark is difficult to read. The simple decoration of four concentric circles is repeated on the pedestal base, the top of the body and the base of the lid. The screw-on lid fits well and the gilding inside is excellent. There are no engravings. There is a slight wobble to the base.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pounce pot, or sander, was used prior to the widespread adoption of blotting paper to sprinkle pounce powdertypically made from powdered cuttlefish bone or gum sandaraconto parchment to smooth the writing surface and dry fresh ink.

Victorian pounce pots were commonly crafted from sterling silver, electroplated nickel silver, or pewter, featuring turned lathe detailing, pedestal feet, and hand-perforated domed lids for controlled powder distribution.

Authentic silver pounce pots carry official British silver hallmarks denoting the maker, purity mark, assay office, and date letter, along with physical indications of historical manufacturing such as seam lines and turned bases.

Place the pounce pot on an executive writing desk alongside contemporary leather blotters, or display it on a library bookshelf positioned among hardback volumes and brass study objects.

Clean gently using a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive compounds that could reduce the clarity of surface hallmarks or lathe-turned reeding.
