Victorian Silver Plated Desk Stand

19th century
Description

A good example of an antique silver plated desk stand complete with a pair of glass inkwells and a central candlestick. It is a stylish and good quality piece set on an ornate rococo style base with engraved foliate decoration. The inkwells have hinged silver plated lids with matching floral decoration and beautiful prism cut glass. The inkwells even have their original glass liners.

It is stamped on the base for the makers Martin Hall & Co.

It is in good condition for its age. There are no major damages, just some faint surface marks and a few minor dinks but nothing detrimental. The candlestick leans ever so slightly and the plating is a little tarnished in places but overall it is bright and still displays well. It has been gently cleaned and polished is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian desk stand, historically known as a standish, is a tabletop tray designed to hold writing instruments, inkwells, and sometimes a taperstick for melting sealing wax. Popular throughout the 19th century, these items served as functional status symbols on library desks and writing tables.

Victorian inkstands were commonly crafted from electroplated nickel silver or sterling silver, often featuring cast or stamped scrollwork and foliage. The ink receptacles typically comprised cut or pressed lead crystal glass, mounted with silver-plated covers.

Authentic pieces often bear makers marks or EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver) stamps on the underside of the tray or base fittings. Construction signs include hand-cut glass facets, fitted gallery sockets, and natural age-related wear showing base metal where plating has thinned.

Position the inkstand on a dark wood executive desk or a hallway console table to add historic structure. It can also function as a decorative vignette component alongside antique books, brass instruments, or framed art in a study.

Clean silver-plated surfaces using a soft cloth and a specialized silver polish formulated to prevent loss of plating layer over time. Remove glass inkwells before cleaning metal parts, and wash glass components gently with warm water and mild liquid soap.
